Due to an overwhelming need for caregivers for families in Canada, the Canadian government created a foreign work permit program in order to fulfill the demand. Candidates must meet certain requirements prior to admittance into the program to ensure that they will be able to successfully work in the Canadian labour market.

BEFORE submitting your application, please ensure that the following requirements have been met or your application will be refused. You will need to show proof by obtaining originals or certified copies of all documents.

• You must have successfully completed the equivalent of a Canadian high school education which translates into a completion of at least 72 college/university units.
• You must have at least two years of full time paid work experience in the past three years.

To claim work experience, you need to have worked for two years, including at least six months of continuous employment for the same employer in a field or occupation similar to what you will do as a live-in caregiver. This experience must have been within the three years immediately before the day on which you make an application for a work permit as a caregiver.

• You must obtain a medical clearance check
• You must obtain a police background check
• You must be able to read, speak, and understand English well
